What Is Natural Skincare?

Natural skincare refers to skincare products made with at least 95% naturally derived ingredients, sourced from nature. These ingredients may be of plant, animal (terrestrial or marine), or mineral origin.

What Is Organic Skincare?

More stringent than natural skincare, organic skincare products must be formulated with ingredients grown in accordance with the principles of organic farming. In addition, they are required to contain a minimum proportion of organically farmed ingredients:

• 95% of the plant-based ingredients in the formula must come from organic farming.

• At least 20% of the total ingredients must be organically farmed (10% for rinse-off products).

Minerals and water are naturally derived ingredients, but they cannot be certified organic as they are not produced through agriculture.

How Can You Tell If a Skincare Product Is Natural or Organic?

With the wide variety of marketing claims on the market and the increasing prevalence of greenwashing, the best way to shop with confidence is to look for recognised labels and certifications displayed on the packaging or the skincare products themselves.

If a skincare product meets these requirements, Ecocert issues a certificate confirming whether it is certified COSMOS Organic or COSMOS Natural, together with the corresponding percentages of certified ingredients.

This information is then clearly displayed on the product packaging. To maintain certification, Ecocert also carries out a comprehensive annual audit of our manufacturing site.

The standard was established by leading European certification bodies specialising in organic cosmetics, including BDIH (Germany), Ecocert (France), ICEA (Italy), the Soil Association (United Kingdom) and Cosmebio (France). Its purpose is to harmonise certification criteria for natural and organic skincare products on an international scale.

It sets out strict requirements covering the origin of ingredients, environmentally responsible manufacturing processes and transparency in product formulation. As a result, consumers can be confident that products bearing the COSMOS label meet high standards of quality, sustainability and environmental responsibility.

The COSMOS Standard is built around four fundamental principles:

- Promoting the use of ingredients from organic farming while respecting biodiversity.

- Using natural resources responsibly and with respect for the environment.

- Applying clean manufacturing processes that protect both human health and the environment.

- Encouraging and advancing the principles of green chemistry.

For certified natural skincare products, the COSMOS NATURAL label is used.

It recognises skincare products whose formulations are based primarily on naturally derived ingredients:

- Free from petrochemical-derived ingredients (such as parabens, phenoxyethanol, synthetic fragrances and artificial colourants).

- No plant-based ingredients derived from genetically modified organisms (GMOs).

- Manufacturing and processing methods that respect both human health and the environment.

- Respect for biodiversity and the responsible use of natural resources.

- Adherence to the principles of green chemistry, favouring products and processes that minimise the use of hazardous substances at every stage.

- Packaged in recyclable packaging.

For certified organic skincare products, the more demanding COSMOS ORGANIC label is used across Europe. It recognises skincare products whose formulations prioritise the use of organically farmed ingredients.
